Percy Caleb Grass was born in Houghton, Norfolk, (Docking Q4-1896 4B:312), son of Charles William and Agnes Lucy GRASS (née HUNT).
1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Bangals,Burrough Green with his father Charles W GRASS [43]gamekeeper,born Saffron Walden; his mother Agnes L [38] born Marlesford, Suffolk; sisters Alice H.[19] born Bury St Edmunds, Emma [14] born Parham, Suffolk, Mary [10] born Dallinghoo (nr Woodbridge) and Ellen [7 months] born New Houghton, Norfolk and brother Robert C [4] born New Houghton. 1911 census...Aged 14, assistant gamekeeper, he was at Cambridge Hill, Burrough Green with his parents, sisters Alice and Ellen and brother Robert Charles (assistant gamekeeper). CWGC later have his parents at Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket. The pension card has his mother at Cambridge Hill, Six Mile Bottom and then moved to Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. His entry in Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour reads : "GRASS, PERCY CALEB, Private, No.26953, 2nd Battn. (12th Foot) the Suffolk Regt., ygr. s.of Charles William Grass, of Six Mile Bottom, Newmarket, Head Gamekeeper to Sir Ernest Cassel, G.C.B., by his wife, Lucy, dau. of the late John Hunt; b.New Houghton, co. Norfolk, 3 Sept.1896; educ. Six Mile Bottom School; enlisted in the 11th (Service) Battn. The Suffolk Regt. 28 March, 1915; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 28 Au.1916, transferring to the 8th Battn.;was wounded at Thiepval 26 Sept.following, and invalided home; returned to France Jan.1917; then transferred to the 2nd Battn.;was again wounded in June and died at No.142 Field Ambulance, Favreuil, near Bapaume, 6 Nov.1917, from the effects of gas poisoning at Bullecourt. Buried at Favreuil; unm." |
